About
Objectives
The AXOLOTL project aims to strengthen the research and innovation (R&I) capacity in marine biodiversity assessment and maritime surveillance by developing and applying advanced deep learning (DL) methodologies. The project strives to address critical gaps in data quality, synchronization, and interdisciplinary approaches, enabling more effective monitoring and management of marine ecosystems and maritime activities. By fostering international collaboration, knowledge transfer, and capacity building, AXOLOTL supports Cyprus and Europe in achieving scientific excellence while aligning with strategic priorities such as the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the European Digital Decade.
The overall project objective will be achieved through the following 4 key S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant to the topic and Time bound) objectives:
1
To implement capacity-building and knowledge transfer activities to strengthen CMMI’s R&I capacity and skills in the interdisciplinary fields of DL-enhanced in-situ biodiversity assessment, and DL-enhanced remote sensing for maritime surveillance.
2
To realize a R&I project that utilizes advanced DL techniques to enhance the visual identification of species from ARMS plate images and improve the monitoring of specific maritime traffic from remote sensing data.
3
To implement networking activities to raise the reputation, research profile and attractiveness of CMMI and enable all partners to improve outreach to an international level.
4
To maximize the project’s impact through wide dissemination, communication, exploitation, and ocean literacy activities.
